Music Theory
Private 1:1 lessons that turn music from something you play into something you understand.

What is Music Theory...
...and why does it matter?
Music theory is the language of music. It explains why things sound the way they do, how music is structured, and how to read, write, and analyse it. For a violin student, it's the difference between playing notes on a page and genuinely understanding what you're playing.
Many students can play their pieces well but struggle when it comes to theory — particularly at grade exams, where the written theory paper can catch people off guard. Dedicated music theory lessons fill that gap and build a foundation that strengthens everything else.
Theory lessons at The Violin Academy are available as standalone sessions or alongside violin lessons — entirely your choice.
Who theory lessons are for.
Violin students preparing for grade exams
ABRSM and MTB exams require theory knowledge from Grade 1 upwards, and a separate written Theory exam is compulsory before taking a Grade 5 practical exam. Getting on top of theory early makes the whole exam journey smoother.
Students who want to understand music more deeply
Not everyone is working towards an exam. Some students simply want to understand what they're playing — to read music more fluently, to recognise keys and time signatures, to understand how harmony works. Theory lessons give you that.
Adults returning to music
Many adult learners played an instrument as a child but never properly learned to read music or understand theory. These lessons are a judgement-free space to fill in the gaps, at whatever pace works for you.
Homeschooled students
Music theory counts as a credible academic subject and ABRSM qualifications are widely recognised. Theory lessons can form part of a structured home education curriculum.

A Note on Theory Within Violin Lessons
All violin lessons at The Violin Academy naturally include elements of music theory — note reading, understanding markings, key signatures, and so on. But for students who want to go deeper, sit a theory exam, or build a more solid theoretical foundation, dedicated theory lessons are the way to do it properly.
